NEW MODERN REALISM

ODE TO TWEED

2022.03.09

By MADDALENA IODICE

What Virginie Viard brought to the catwalk is an upbeat ode to love and celebration of tweed feminine potential. From Scottish country side inspiration to the vibrancy of contemporary cities.

Allowing for infinite combinations of colours and materials, tweed is an eternal code for the House, and Virginie Viards for Fall-Winter 2022 Ready-to-Wear collection makes it the absolute protagonist of the show, “I love working with it so much, I couldn’t live without it at CHANEL”. Presented at the Grand Palais Éphémère, the space was swathed entirely in tweed, there were jackets in psychedelic colours, subtly masculine or slightly oversize, an echo of those Gabrielle used to steal to her beloved Duke of Westminster, and made her own.“There’s nothing sexier than wearing the clothes of the person you love” says Virginie Viard. The Collection is both an ode to love and a tribute to the River Tweed and the way Gabrielle Chanel would have drawn inspiration from Scottish countryside hues: a long pink coat mottled with blue and purple, or a burgundy suit with a delicate gold shimmer. Virginie Viard definitely knows how to honor the Maison’s roots blending them with that sense of upbeat ease young contemporary woman are craving for.

“There’s nothing sexier than wearing the clothes of the person you love […] Of course, I’m fascinated by this ever-contemporary gesture. And it’s CHANEL that renders the tweed feminine.”
