NEW MODERN REALISM

WALK TO THE MOON

2023.04.13

Walk to the Moon is Suffo Moncloa’s wild dream, a collection of sharp moments that signal an apocalyptic world, a parallelism between illusion and photography.

Suffo Moncloa takes time to think, uses the stalemate we have all faced to reflect on his photographic archive, his work. Imagining the future is difficult, and remembering the past is often complex: the Spanish photographer devotes himself totally to his shots, prioritizing those that caught his attention immediately, reordering along the way even the memories. Confusing narratives arise from combination of images and uninterrupted thoughts, leading Suffo toward the beginning of a journey between fantasy and reality, between illusion and photography. Walk to the Moon is the title of the journey: the photo book consists of predominantly prior to 2015 images, transporting the reader to a uncontaminated, apocalyptic world. After realizing that we are only trembling little dot in the earth’s history, one senses the photographer’s need to dare, to push the limits of the possible, inviting the viewer to think big as well. “Why not launch into wild dreams?”: indeed, the collection of images for Suffo depicts a wild dream that allows the photographer to construct a serene and meditative space for himself and for the audience.

“We are all just flickering dots in the earth’s history. Why not dare? Dream a wild dream.”

– Suffo Moncloa

WALK TO THE MOON, SUFFO MONCLOA.

When we wake up from a dream, even one of the most memorable ones, only details of a moment remain imprint in our memory, sometimes clear, sometimes fuzzy, triggering intense feelings within us. The photographs in Walk to the Moon, presented by Fondazione Sozzani, emphasize the relationship between dreams and photography: the shots are charged with emotion, they make us daydream, they are in search of beauty amidst the banality of everyday life. The significant images are recognizably those of Moncloa: they depict animals lying down and relaxing in a vast and pure environment, the pedestrian traffic of a city and colorful flowers scattered in nature, they capture the moonlight and the sound of sea waves. Fashion and art embrace in the photographs, alternating muted colors with black and white shots, recalling the soft hues of dreams. The viewer admiring the images enters a fantastic journey, in which he can reflect on himself and clearly understand Suffo’s contemporary and refined aesthetic. Walk to the Moon is the photographer’s path to reworking his archive and urging the audience to let go, wishing rebirth as a lotus flower grows in muddy water.

The presentation of the book Walk to the Moon will take place on April, 13th at 6PM at the Fondazione Sozzani, Via Enrico Tazzoli 3, Milan.
