Dior / Lindbergh
Galerie Dior, Paris
From October 17th, 2024 until May 4th, 2025
The exhibition specially conceived for the spaces of the Galerie Dior in Paris is a unique and wonderful retrospective that pays tribute to one of the most important fashion photographers of all time, Peter Lindbergh. The work is made possible by the Peter Lindbergh Foundation, and brings together more than one hundred images taken between 1988 and 2018. Each shot was taken for Dior, encapsulating the essence of the brand, its clothes, its muses, its inspirations. The shots create an incessant dialogue between models, creations and the Maison’s codes. The succession of Creative Directors has ensured that the pivotal codes evolve, change in relation to the passing of time, mutate to keep pace with modern culture and society. Lindbergh’s lens is characterised by a naturalistic approach, revolutionary for the time, beauty is revealed without any construction or artifice, telling a free vision of fashion. Lindbergh also set the benchmark for the supermodel era, launching images that became iconic for entire generations.

“My great subject was women. To follow them as closely as possible so that they could express themselves and assert their truth. I track down a mystery, I seek an emotion.”
Within the collection are images taken from iconic series, as well as shots never before presented to the public. One of the initiatives on show here for the first time was taken in October 2018 specifically for Dior, shot on the streets of New York. The art of street photography allowed Lindbergh to revolutionise the concept of fashion photography, disrupting the idea of the glossy image that rendered the supermodel of unattainable and perfect beauty, in favour of shots of great real value, apparently casual, spontaneous. The photographer manages to get in touch with the subject, portraying her strengths but also her weaknesses and vulnerabilities. The energy transmitted by each of his images supports Dior’s assertion of modernity. The retrospective sheds light on the deepest affinities between fashion and photography, between Dior and Peter Lindbergh. A point of connection between the energy of a garment and the feeling that an image can give rise to. Time seems to stand still in an unprecedented dialogue, in an evocative visual and contemporary composition.

“Haute couture was traditionally associated with an idea of perfection and extreme mastery; my wish was to transport 70 years of Dior creations into unexpected territory. The contrast with the streets of New York provided the perfect backdrop for revealing unsuspected emotions.”
