MONSIEUR DIOR

2023.04.18

Text by Lucrezia Sgualdino

Maison Dior and French architect and designer Philippe Starck enrich their collaboration at the Salone del Mobile 2023. The Monsieur Dior armchair is a tribute to the great couturier, a fusion of savoir-faire and state-of-the-art techniques.

Philippe Stark continues his personal reinterpretation of Dior’s famous and exclusive Médaillon Chair. The new Monsieur Dior armchair is part of a timeless furniture collection, a fine line that characterises the artistic partnership between two great names of the international creative scene and represents a vital inspiration, a profound tribute to the emblematic figure of the couturier. Philippe Starck is famous for his visionary and poetic works, here he once again fuses the aesthetic canons of the Maison with unique mastery, redefining the limits of excellence. “After Miss Dior – the chair inspired by the iconic Médaillon, created in 2022 for my first collaboration with Dior – it seemed natural to expand the family with Monsieur Dior, a new, unprecedented armchair,” comments the designer. The collaboration reflects the will and desire to explore the myth of the Médaillon Chair. Through a careful study of this element, a revamped version of it is presented, with the aim of revealing its true essence and great history. The creation presented for the occasion brings to the stage exceptional savoir-faire fused with the most advanced craftsmanship and industrial engineering. Starck perfects its structure, highlighting its most iconic and traditional elements in a fresh and modern way.

“This pair of creations is perfectly balanced through the essential and existential notions of gravity and lightness, of yin and yang. Miss Dior and Monsieur Dior, Catherine and Christian Dior, sister and brother, chair and armchair; it is the story of a sublime complementary duality.”

– Philippe Starck

All the pieces are elevated to the status of objects of art, Palazzo Citterio once again becomes the setting for an evocative installation curated by Soundwalk Collective, which accompanies the public in the discovery of a new family of design elements: seats, tables and stools available in different materials and colours, ranging from aluminium to pink, from black to the fluo orange Toile de Jouy pattern. The experience is immersive, the set is animated by a video-music installation, a narrator’s voice revealing the details of the collaboration itself and a QR code that allows access to exclusive content to fully explore the world of Dior Maison. A unique and magical atmosphere that is once again given to us by a careful and skilful exclusive dialogue between fashion and design.

“A collection of couture furniture enhanced by younger brothers and sisters, including tables of different sizes and stools, all extremely refined.”

CHALLENGERS

2024.04.24

In Guadagnino’s new film, tennis is a metaphor for the brutal juxtaposition between love and desire, comfort and recklessness, eventually taking on an almost theatrical, dramatic connotation. Set against the backdrop of Back Bay, Challengers brings to the screen a magnificently complex love triangle.
