Yorgos Lanthimos Photographs
MACK Books + Webber at 939, Los Angeles
From March 29th until May 24th, 2025
Multifaceted Greek creative Yorgos Lanthimos is known for his work within the film industry, as a five-time Academy Award-nominated director, producer, and screenwriter he’s has earned numerous accolades for his body of work that includes Kinetta, Dogtooth, Alps, The Lobster, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, The Favourite, Poor Things, and Kinds of Kindness.
But, look beyond filmmaking, and he’s also an accomplished photographer, having published two photography books: Dear God, the Parthenon is Still Broken (VOID) and I Shall Sing These Songs Beautifully (MACK), and now, Webber 939, the contemporary gallery known for its diverse programmes spanning photography, sculpture, performance, sound, and moving image, is celebrating his photography work.
Simply entitled, PHOTOGRAPHS, this exhibition showcases photographs from Lanthimos’s recent books, I Shall Sing These Songs Beautifully, taken during the filming of his latest feature Kinds of Kindness together with Dear God, the Parthenon is Still Broken, which was captured during the making of Poor Things. Here, his exhibition offers an insight into his artistic practice that explores his signature theme: human relationships.

The stills in the exhibition are set against real locations in New Orleans and Budapest, as well as recreated cities and interiors from London, Lisbon, Alexandria, and Paris. These backdrops serve as the setting for Lanthimos’s shots, which are charged with unsettling atmospheres and tension; cue the haunting figures, often depicted with intense physicality, limbs spread out, and faces turned away.
In I Shall Sing These Songs Beautifully, Lanthimos subtly repurposes his cast and film sets to create an entirely new narrative, and In Dear God, the Parthenon is Still Broken, the detritus of the film set, scaffolding, lighting rigs, and a coffee cup, appear on the edges of the photographs, collapsing the boundary between fiction and reality.
While this debut exhibition originates from the spaces of Lanthimos’s cinema and mind, it presents a distinct world, untethered by narrative, time, or place, and in doing so, solidifies Lanthimos within the contemporary photographic scene and highlights his wider influence on modern visual culture.
